Sport specific Pilates

AMB Physio-Pilates also offers sport specific Pilates classes. Ann-Marie can deliver Pilates exercise classes, designed to help athletes meet the specific requirements of their sport, helping to optimise performance and gain that athletic edge, as well as facilitate injury recovery and assist in injury prevention. Ann-Marie has experience in delivering sport specific Pilates for professional golfers, GB Basketball athletes and high level Tennis players.

Ann-Marie has worked as a Physiotherapist with sport teams, including Great British Judo, British Basketball and Sunderland Sports Academy. She is also a keen sportswomen herself, playing golf at county level, and football for Newcastle United reserves as a youngster, as well as basketball for The University of Liverpool. In addition, Ann-Marie completed a post graduate course in school centered initial teacher training (SCITT) in Physical Education. This has equipped Ann-Marie with a knowledge of various sports and the physical demands involved in these, as well as excellent teaching skills to plan and facilitate learning. She can therefore plan a Pilates class specific to any sport. This can be performed on an individual basis or as part of a class, contact Ann-Marie to discuss further.

Golf

Requirements:

  • Spinal rotation, shoulder and hip mobility: for adequate hip and shoulder turn.

  • Core/glut strength: to generate power from the trunk rotation and hip extension as you come into the follow through swing.

  • Balance, co-ordination and single leg stability to prevent sway and maintain the correct club path.

Basketball

Requirements:

  • Spinal rotation and hip mobility to change direction quickly to mark players and drive past opponents to the basket.

  • Shoulder mobility to catch at awkward angles and enough shoulder range for accurate shooting technique.

  • Core/glut strength to generate power in vertical jumps to rebound and shoot as well as guarding and boxing out under the basket.

  • Balance, stability and co-ordination to facilitate deceleration, landings and prevent falls and injuries such as ACL tears and ankle sprains.

Tennis

Requirements:

  • Spinal rotation, shoulder and hip mobility to generate powerful serves and shots as well as to change direction quickly around the court.

  • Core/glut strength for force production. The majority of force production in overhead shots is produced by the legs and core!

  • Balance and co-ordination to generate a stable foundation to generate powerful shots.
